ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Mini Woolies
Henbury joined 55 other special education schools around Australia and New Zealand with the opening of our own Mini Woolies. The Mini Woolies is an asset and provides valuable learning opportunities for our students. On 19th March we welcomed our school community, dignitaries, Woolworths and Fujitsu VIPs, and media to celebrate the official opening. School captains Michael and Hannah did a terrific job leading the proceedings, and Retail Skillset Program students and NTLC members put their training into action as they served customers. Hannah and Year 7 student Mia also wowed audiences as they spoke with confidence to Katie Woolf at the 104.9FM studio the following day about this fantastic new resource.
Structured Teaching Visit
In Week 9 we welcomed Structured Teaching expert Gail Preston back to Henbury for her annual visit to the school. Gail worked closely with staff to review, workshop and refine the components of Structured Teaching in their classroom spaces and programs. Structured Teaching is vital part of Henbury’s teaching and learning practices. We are grateful for Gail’s expertise and ongoing support! Check out the below visual which explains each component of Structured Teaching.

Henbury Precinct Op Shop and Café Holiday operating hours
Have you had the chance to visit the Op Shop or Café located at Casuarina Village this year? If not, we’d love to see you there!
The Op Shop will continue with its normal operating hours over the Term 1 holiday break (Tuesday-Friday 8am-4:30pm and Saturday 8am-2pm). We are always in need of donations so please drop them off directly to the shop, or to the school.
The Café will be open this week including Saturday 6th April, and then will be closed over the holiday week break, re-opening on Thursday 18th April for its usual hours going forward, Thursday – Saturday 8:30am-1:30pm.
Attendance Matters
Maintaining regular school attendance is extremely important for continuity of student learning, wellbeing and keeping strong routines. Everyday counts, check out the visual below. If you are having difficulty with getting your child to school on a regular basis, please contact your child’s teacher or one of the senior staff. If your child is away sick or for another reason, please ensure you notify the school via phone, text or email.
Congratulations to Elizabeth, Mark, AJ, Julian, Angus, Manolis, Alex, Clinton, Cruz and Kristine for being the first ten students drawn from the 100% attendance box. They have earned a prize or pizza lunch with the Principal.
Education Adjustment Plans (EAP) and Transition EAPs
By now nearly all EAP (Years 7-9) and TEAPs (Years 10-12) meetings have taken place with teachers and parents/carers/guardians. If you have not had a meeting with your child’s teacher, or don’t have a one booked for early Term 2, please contact the front office. EAP and TEAP plans will come home early in Term 2.
Term 2
We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable break. Term 2 resumes on Tuesday 16th April.

PURPLE 5 SEND THEIR GREETINGS
Good day friends and families. What an exciting year we have ahead of us in Purple 5! We can hardly believe it’s already the end of Term 1 but golly we have filled up the days with some adventures, laughs and fun learning! Our team this year is a group of wonderful educators that are dedicated to growing communication skills, and the students are already thriving in this creative and supportive environment.
Students have been encouraged to independently request preferred activities or food choices, a highly motivating tool for our enthusiastic bunch! Community Access choices have also been an appealing avenue for communication, with students selecting places such as East Point to feed the horses, or flavours of milkshakes at the Waterfront.
Inside the classroom we have been exploring the wonders of outer space, more specifically our solar system! We handcrafted paper mâché sculptures of our many planets. The sensory experience woven into this area of our learning has been a highlight for everyone!
We are eager to see what the rest of the year has in store for our Purple five tribe!
BLUE 1
Welcome to our first B1 Class Newsletter for 2024! This term, our students have been busy settling in to Henbury, making new friends, following new routines, and exploring various activities that blend learning with fun.
B1 students have done a terrific job settling in and our classroom has been full of laughter and learning. One of our main passions has been our cooking and baking sessions. B1 students have honed their culinary skills, measuring ingredients, locating materials in the kitchen, following recipes to create delicious meals, and very importantly cleaning up their mess. In our maths and literacy rotations students have been doing hands-on activities, playing interactive games, comprehension tasks, independent work, money maths and we have learnt how to read a clock.
Outdoor adventures around the school have included bike riding, horticulture, and swimming. Our students have loved the physical exercise, gardening skills, outdoor exploration, the freedom of movement, essential water safety skills and the opportunity to have some fun! The students have thoroughly enjoyed Enterprise Ed, sewing together some wonderful creations.
Our Community Access visit saw us take a trip to the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) which enriched our understanding of culture and history, with a side of hot chips for lunch! The students loved it!
Have the best school holiday break, from B1 class.
HELLO FROM DHS OUTREACH
It has been a wonderful start to the year in the DHS Outreach class.
This year we have welcomed 2 students to our class, Sierra, and Laura, and welcomed back Ryan, Jordan, Snaha and Antonia.
Students have been busy getting started with their NTCET assessment tasks for English, Math, Health, and Cross Disciplinary Studies, as well as decluttering and redecorating our space to make it more comfortable and encouraging for learning.
We have 3 NTLC representatives in our class this year (Ryan, Jordan, and Laura), and a Vice School Captain (Snaha). Congratulations to these students for being role models, and for using their ideas and voices to make improvements to our school!
We are all looking forward to Term 2 – when we will be starting community access, and continuing to be busy, keen learners who enjoy having fun at school 😊
GREETINGS FROM OUR CSC CLASSROOMS
Students and staff at CSC have had a good and productive start to 2024. We have enjoyed visiting Casuarina Square, Casuarina Library and Darwin City.
We look forward to visiting many more parts of Darwin as the year progresses.
We have also focused on social and team building activities as we continue to get to know each other.
BASKETBALL
On Wednesday 13th March we had two Henbury teams participate in the 3x3 Basketball Gala Day.
The competition was tough, but our guys didn't give up as they competed in a huge 10 games each!
The boys: Angus, Francis and Marcius didn't have any subs, pushing through and coming 9th in their pool.
The girls: Agnes, Narvia, Azaria and Briseis absolutely smashed it, placing 4th out of the 11 teams in their pool.
A massive shout out for their efforts and hard work.
SKILL SET SCREEN-PRINTING
This week, our screen-printing enthusiasts embarked on an enriching excursion to Coleman’s Printing in the heart of the city. Guided by Magdalene, the company’s CEO, they delved into the inner workings of the factory. The students were thrilled to receive complimentary souvenirs and were particularly captivated by the artworks decorating the walls, notably the enchanting forest corner.
Immersed in the tour, they gained insights into the intricacies of the machinery, appreciating the diversity showcased by the equipment, including one machine from Germany. Exploring the realm of colour theory in printing, the students were fascinated by the variety possibilities that Coleman’s offers, spanning from printing on paper fans to crafting boat and car wraps.
After visiting Coleman's, our next stop was MAGNT, where we sought inspiration from the 2023 EXIT arts exhibition featuring the creations of last year's departing year 12 students. It was a particularly special moment to encounter the work of one of our own – Sophie’s mesmerizing dragons!
The excursion proved not only educational but also inspirational, igniting a passion for creativity and innovation within our students.
GOOD LUCK BRISEIS
Briseis is travelling to Adelaide on the 12th of April to participate in the Australian Athletics Championships. She will be participating in the 100m, 200m, 400m and Long Jump. She has been training very hard and feeling confident and excited. She is looking forward to her hour delay in Melbourne so that she can catch up with her old teacher Ms Rowan Barrow.
Henbury School wishes her the best of luck!
NTLC UPDATE
Our Northern Territory Learning Commissioners (NTLC) have had a busy few weeks. Along with preparing for and hosting the Mini Woollies opening event, they conducted a survey about school camp options for our middle years’ students - watch this space for more info to come out soon! School Captains Hannah and Michael attended an online Youth Voice Peak Group meeting last Thursday where they we part of valuable discussion around the Secondary Schools Review. They came up with a great idea to gather other student’s viewpoints around this topic area at the Week 10 Pop Up Stall. NTLC also hosted the End of Term Assembly this week, which they always do a fantastic job with.
SONY CAMP 2024
Haileybury Rendall School will once again host the Haileybury Rendall School Sony Foundation Children’s Holiday Camp.
